Porcelain or gold crowns.
Crowns (also known as ‘a cap’) are full-coverage restorations made from either porcelain or gold that are used to cover a tooth that is likely to break or is too damaged to be corrected with a traditional filling.
A dental crown is the superior option for a tooth that has been damaged by grinding, decay or fracture or has an older large amalgam or composite filling. A crown is also recommended about 6 months after having a root canal treatment. A dental crown strengthens your tooth by providing 360 degrees of coverage.
What is involved in the crown process?
At your initial appointment at Wanaka Dental, we will administer full local anesthesia for the tooth being treated. The dentist will then prepare the tooth conservatively to create room for the crown.
After thorough assessment of the shape and contour, a digital scan or impression of the treated tooth will be taken. This material or image will allow the ceramist to create a crown that looks and feels like your natural tooth.
A temporary crown is made, polished and fitted. For the following two weeks, you’ll want to avoid sticky foods and flossing near the treated tooth, so the temporary crown stays put.
During your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and the final crown will be tried in and examined. We will take a dental X-ray to ensure quality fit and aesthetic approval. An adhesive is then applied to the tooth and a cement will be placed onto the interior of the crown. The crown is then fitted and any adjustments to your bite are made. Volia! You have the crown you deserve!
